  1. I enjoyed the discussion the author had about getting boys to write. There are differences in likes and dislikes that are important to nurture. i always like to be sure my students know how much i love sports. I feel this allows me to hook the boys in and get them experimenting with writing about their sports. And once again the idea of sketching has been brought up. I have experimented with it a little in my room and find it is working nicely. I do give students a time limit and I find some even choose not to sketch. The ones that do sketch tend to have more organized stories than they would normally. It doesn't work with every project but it is a goo tool to have.

  2. In the discussion of using the notebook across the curriculum was very timely for me. I have just begun having students use notebooks in math. So far it is a slow start. I am using the information from my unit research to assist the implementation. I have the students using their notebooks for drawing, word webs, and sentence stems for our fraction unit.

Kathleen - I have them keep their math in a separate notebook than their writing workshop - Do you think I should merge the two?

  3. Kathleen and I are currently trying to decide as a third grade team how to refine our homework. Perhaps more free writing homework would be a welcome change every now and again. I feel it would really make the students see literacy all around them - in music, on signs, people talking. They wouldn't need to write their own ideas everyday but maybe just notice and write down the literacy they hear. This has helped my own writing journal.

What do you think about that Kathleen?

  4. I especially liked the idea of assessing the notebooks for accountability and productivity. I think it conveys to the students that you take their writing seriously enough to look at it closely and assign a grade. When students know that we will look at something, they tend to put forth more effort which will lead to better writing!
Molly, there was a section on technology and blogging. Are you going to attempt this once your SMartBOard gets hooked up? I think that would be really motivating for students.

  5. Molly, I like your idea of a math journal. Students usually have difficulty explaining their solution to a given problem. Writing will really expand their mathematical knowledge! My advice would be to use the same writing notebook. I probably would have the students tab off a section at the back for math writing. I would also make it a point to tell them that mathematical writing is a type of writing...not its separate entity! Who knows? They might incorporate these ideas in their expository writing.

  6. I love your idea about free writing! I would love to send home their writer's notebooks, however, what if they lost them? Maybe we could staple paper together as a "trial" notebook. If they brought it back for a given amount of time and its in good shape, then they could earn the privilege of bringing their notebooks home to share with their families...that might work! What do you think of that idea Molly?

  7. That is a wonderful idea! I will keep it in mind as I get used to the Smartboard- that is if it ever gets hooked up. That is a good idea to tab off a section in the back of the writer's notebook. I will give it a try!

  8. Kathleen good idea about the trial journal for homework. That will also instil a sense of importance with the journal that I know will help keep it safe. Let's remember to share this with our team during planning next Thursday!
